What are fibroids?
Fibroids are benign growths that appear in the muscle of the uterus. There are a number of potential factors that could cause fibroids, however it is understood that the female hormone oestrogen causes fibroids to grow. Fibroids can be treated with observation, medical treatment, uterine artery embolisation or surgery.
Although a majority of women with fibroids do not have symptoms, when symptoms are present they include:
- Heavy, long and painful periods
- Pain during sex
- Spotting between periods
- Feeling of heaviness or pressure in the back, bowel and bladder
- Urinating often
- A lump or swelling in the lower abdomen
Around 30 – 40% of women over the age of 40 have fibroids. Please see your doctor or Gynaecologist in treating Fibroids.
