Explaining IVF
The IVF process involves the fertilisation of the egg in a laboratory instead of inside the fallopian tubes. Once a semen sample has been collected it is placed in a culture dish with many thousands of sperm. Fertilisation will take place over the next few hours and a number of embryos will be formed.
Over a period of two to five days the fertilised embryos are developed in the laboratory. After they have been developed they will be transferred to the woman’s uterus, through a procedure known as an embryo transfer.
